I went to the University of Toronto in 1988 to study Drama and Physics. After two years, I left school to work full time for a year and then go traveling.
My first major trip overseas was to Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
Upon returning to Canada I went back to school, this time adding a Political Science major to my course load.
I spent the summer of 1995 in the UK, mostly in Northern Ireland.
After graduation it was back on the road. 1996/97 I went to Africa: Crossing the continent solo from Cairo to Cape Town.
Back in Canada I started writing for local newspapers and volunteering at Rogers Community Cable. Eventually I was the Sports Editor for the Annex Gleaner and the Host of Earth Alive covering local environmental issues.
I entered professional television when Sportsnet (then owned by CTV) went on the air. I began as a broadcast associate and moved up through the ranks in a handful of positions. Within two and a half years I was producing the nightly highlight show, SportsCentral Primetime.
Next, I joined Summerhill Entertainment to produce “Out of Bounds with John Oakley.” I launched the concept and oversaw the show for the first 65 episodes.
In 2002 I headed back to Africa for two months, this time focusing on eastern South Africa and Mozambique.
As a freelancer I worked as a writer and lineup producer for CTV National News and CTV NewsNet. I also stayed active at Sportsnet producing features for many of their magazine shows such as the Golf Report and the Business of Sports.
While freelancing I made time for a series of short trips to Central America: Panama, Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala.
Then, in 2006 I landed at Discovery Channel: first to launch and produce a magazine show for sale to Asia, and now to produce segments and/or act as lineup producer for the flagship show, Daily Planet. Discovery Channel has sent me around the globe, with stops in Denmark, Siberia, and Kalamazoo.
