Whitby 27

This page has been established in an effort to track down all 16 existing Whitby 27's. -- That's assuming there really was 16.

The Whitby 27 design was based on the Elvstrom 1/4 ton - a North Sea boat designed in 1975. This is probably why she has a low cabin top. It's a blue water boat too - if you're up to it. Displacement is about 1740 kilos (3700 lbs).  Most have a fin keel with a draft of about 5' - 6'. Between 1976 and 1977 Whitby Boat Works in Whitby Ontario Canada produced 16 of these boats.

As for why so few were built... well, your guess is as good as mine. The cost of fibreglass was skyrocketing in the late 70's and perhaps that made the boats too expensive to build. Maybe it was just a change of heart at the Whitby Boat Works.

If you have any information to share about the Whitby 27, please email us.

Boat #1 Is now called "Alexsis." She is owned by Bill and Marie Church in Chester, Nova Scotia. Previously it was named "Plexaura," (a minor greek goddess of wind and calm.)  when it was owned by Barry Butler of Halifax. He purchased the boat in 2003 from an owner in Chester, Nova Scotia who had brought it to NS from Ontario. It was previously called "Second Wind."

Boats #2 - #4 Whereabouts unknown

Boat #5  Carramy Shadow (previously "Fluid Drive"). Owned by Jeff Blundell and Lisa Turnbull since December 2005. Currently docked at Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club in Pickering. It is named after a race horse and it is Jeff and Lisa's first boat. The boat is currently up for sale.

Boat #6 Named "North by East." Currently moored in Cobourg, Ontario. I've met the guy who owns her, but for the life of me, I can't find where I wrote down his name.

Boat #7 Named "Bianca." Owned by Luke and Simone in Nova Scotia. Bianca was formerly owned by Gerry Vandersanden in Cobourg, Ontario.

An interesting side note: Although #7 is named "Bianca" That is also the name sometimes given to all Whitby 27's. Bianca is the name of a European designed boat that the Whitby 27's were based on.

Boat #8 Whereabouts Unknown.

Boat #9 Rumoured (2005) to be moored at LSYC in Toronto. But I have been unable to confirm this.

Boat #10 Whereabouts Unknown.

Boat #11 Currently in Kingston at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

Boat #12 This beautiful bright yellow Whitby 27 is owned by Jean-Loup Robert in Quebec City. It's named "French Connection."

Boats #14 - #16 Whereabouts Unknown.
